John originally joined the Teamsters in 1980 in the freight industry working for companies such as Preston Trucking, St. Johnsbury, Pilot Motor Freight and Yellow Freight. He served as a shop steward for 10 of those years while attending the George Meany College for Labor Studies. He focused on collective bargaining and organizing. In 1997, he went to work for the International Brotherhood of Teamsters in the Field Services Division while working on the National Master Freight Agreement.
In 1998 John was appointed to the position of organizer at Local 639. Companies such as Aggregate Industries, DynCorp, Airgas, Melwood, UPS Freight, Peapod, Kraft/Nabisco, Waste Management, BFI, Clark Construction, New Horizon and others were organized by John with the collective efforts of members and agents of 639.
In 2000, John Gibson was appointed and subsequently elected as Business Agent and in 2004 was elected Secretary Treasurer and has been re-elected by the members to this position in 2007, 2010, 2013, 2016 and 2019. John was appointed to the position of President in September 2019.

Bill began his Teamster career in 1986 when he went to work as a freight driver for APA Transport at Local 557 in Baltimore, Maryland. In 1994, Bill joined Local 639 as a Tractor Trailer Driver for Giant Food in Landover, Maryland. In 2001, Bill’s fellow Teamster members at Giant Food elected him to the position of shop steward, a position he held until 2010. In 2010, Bill was appointed as a Business Agent by the Executive Board of Local 639 and was subsequently re-elected in 2013, 2016 and 2019. Bill was appointed to his current position of Secertary-Treasurer by the Excutive Board in October of 2020.

Wayne’s career as a Teamster began in 1980 when he started working for Giant Food as a dairyman. In 2002, Wayne was elected by his fellow Teamster members to represent them as their Shop Steward. In 2010, Wayne was elected as a Trustee of Local 639 and in 2010 was appointed to the position of Business Agent and re-elected to that position in 2013 and 2016. Wayne was promoted to the position of Vice President on January 1, 2017 and re-elected to the position of Vice President in 2019.

Rob began his Teamster career at UPS as a part time package handler in 1990 after an honorable discharge from the United States Marine Corps. In 1993 Rob took a job as a package car driver in the Alexandria, Virginia UPS facility. In 2005, Rob’s leadership abilities earned him a position as a Shop Steward until 2008 when he was appointed as a Business Agent at Local 639 and subsequently re-elected in 2010, 2013, 2016 and 2019. Rob was appointed to the position of Recording-Secretary in September 2019.

DaWayne's career as a 639 Teamster began while working at Giant Food Dairy warehouse processing milk in June 1986. DaWayne has proven time and again he is a true Teamster who works tirelessly for the members at Marva Maid. In 2010 DaWayne was elected to the position of Shop Steward. DaWayne comes to every meeting at the Local and has volunteered every year to raise money for the Scholarship Program. DaWayne was appointed to the position of Trustee in October 2019.

Robert started his career at DCPS as a driver in 1987. Robert was elected as a Shop Steward in 2005 by his fellow workers and was appointed to the position of Trustee to the Executive Board at Local 639 in 2010 and elected to the position of Trustee by the members in 2013, 2016 and 2019.

Chuck’s career as a Teamster began in 1984 as a package car driver at UPS. In 1988, Chuck’s fellow Teamster employees recognized his leadership abilities and elected him as their shop steward. Chuck’s steady approach to resolving workplace issues earned the respect of the leadership of Local 639 and in 2010 he was elected as a Trustee of Local 639 and re-elected in 2013. Chuck was appointed to the position of Business Agent in 2016 and elected to the position of Business Agent in 2019. Chuck enjoys spending time with his extended family when he is not working.

Scott’s career as a Teamster began in 2006 when he became a driver with the District of Columbia Public Schools Food and Nutrition Services. The following year, 2007, Scott’s fellow Teamster members recognized Scott’s drive for a strong voice on the job and elected him as their Shop Steward. Soon after, in 2010, Local 639 saw in Scott a strong desire to stand as an advocate for all members and appointed him as an Organizer. The following year, 2011, Scott was appointed as a Business Agent and then re-elected again in 2013, 2016 and 2019.

Mark joined the Teamsters in 1992 as a part time UPS package loader in the Burtonsville, MD location. In 1998 he was awarded a full time combination job as a Carwash/Preloader. He became a full time Preloader and Steward in 2001. Mark was appointed to Business Agent in early 2018 and elected to that position in the fall of 2018. Mark is a third generation Teamster and proud to be a member of Local 639.

Roland joined Local 639 in May 1988 as a part time UPS worker. In 1990 he became a package car driver and in 1994 started working as a feeder driver at UPS. In 2005 Roland started working for Safeway as a tractor trailer driver and was elected as a Shop Steward in 2016. Roland was appointed to the Executive Board of Local 639 as a Trustee in the fall of 2016. Roland was promoted and appointed to the position of Business Agent in August of 2017 and elected to the position of Business Agent in 2019.

Ed started his Teamster career at United Parcel Service in 2001 as a Package Car Driver in Burtonsville MD. In 2008 Ed was elected by his fellow employees at UPS to the position of Shop Steward. In 2020 Ed was appointed to the position of Business Agent for Local 639 by the Exective Board.

Cory started his Teamster career at Red Star Trucking with Teamster Local 355. In 2001 Cory Joined the US Army and earned an honorable discharge for his service to his country. Cory became a 639 member when he started with UPS in 2006. In 2013 Cory was elected Shop Steward by his fellow members at UPS. In 2020 Cory was appointed to the position of Business Agent by the Executive Board of Local 639.

John’s career as a Teamster began in 1995 as a delivery driver for Martin-Brower in Manassas, Virginia.John’s strong advocacy for worker’s rights, his leadership skills and his vast knowledge of the contract was quickly recognized by his fellow Teamsters and he was elected shop steward in 1999. He has served on several negotiating committees during his tenure and has fought hard to increase wages and improve working conditions. Due to John’s continued hard work and dedication to the membership John was promoted to the position of Business Agent in November of 2020 by the Executive Board of Local 639.

Alethia has been a Teamster since 1996, and is currently the Office Manager/TITAN Operator of Local 639. She also coordinates the annual Teamster Local 639 Golf Scholarship Tournament.

Barbara stated her career at Local 639 in 2020 as the Bookkeeper for Local 639. She also assist's with the Movie members. Barbara really enjoys her job here at the Local helping and supporting the membership.
Shelly became a Teamster in 1999 when she was working as a Mental Health Technician at Riverside Hospital. She was a Shop Steward until Riverside closed in 2008. She then came to work as an Administrative Assistant at the Local providing clerical support to the Officers and Business Agents of Local 639.
